According to the agency, the crash occurred about 14 miles west of Kingman.
DPS identified the wrong-way driver as an 82-year-old man from Nevada.?He died at a local hospital.?
DPS was at the scene investigating.
Further details were not immediately available.
The crash closed the westbound lanes on I-40 near Griffith Road for several hours Friday morning, according to an Arizona Department of Transportation tweet posted at 9:50 a.m. Just after 11:30 a.m.,?one of the two westbound lanes had reopened, and the other opened later in the afternoon.
The agency, in a tweet, advised westbound motorists to exit no later than Oatman Highway (exit 44) to avoid getting stuck in the backups.
ADOT was advising alternative routes to the California state line include taking U.S 93 in Kingman, then State Routes 68 and 95.
